Four Independent Printing Heads
There is no doubt that 2026 will be the year of multi-head 3D printing, and we are riding this industry trend.
We visited a print farm back in late 2024. The farm was packed with thousands of printers, each trailed by massive piles of filament waste. This scene made us rethink: Is this traditional multi-color printing really worthwhile?

At the start of 2025, material swapping remained the mainstream solution. By then, most people had already realized the drawbacks of multi-color printing. Converting a single-color design to multi-color would extend print time by 3 to 5 times, while purge waste could surge over 10 times, depending on color complexity. Yet users had no alternative. Anyone wanting multi-color prints had to bear these extra costs, or stick solely to single-color output.
We explored countless solutions: swapping entire print heads, hot ends and extruders, or even fitting multiple nozzles into one single print head. Our goal was to slash color-switching time and cut material waste caused by filament changes.
Our ultimate vision was clear: zero material change time and zero purge waste, making multi-color printing just as efficient as single-color printing.
Eliminating purge waste was relatively achievable via interchangeable tool heads or hot ends. The real challenge was minimizing color and material switching time. The best solutions on the market at the time still required around 5 seconds per switch. We wondered: Could we push this even further?
Let’s break down the standard material switching workflow. First, the finished nozzle retracts to its storage position, a new print head moves out from storage, grabs the target nozzle, and returns to the printing area. This process involves at least three sequential movements, which can only be optimized by boosting travel speed.
Then we came up with a new approach: while Nozzle A finishes printing, Nozzle B is pre-heated and ready, and moves into position simultaneously. This enables near-instant filament switching.
The answer was obvious: independent print heads. With four independent heads, multi-color printing takes nearly the same time as single-color work and produces zero purge waste. For single-color prints, the four heads can run simultaneously to produce four identical or mirrored models at once. For example, a pair of shoes in one go. This is a game-changer for print farms and high-volume production: one machine delivers the output of four separate printers.
This first-principles thinking filled us with excitement, yet we stayed fully prudent. We thoroughly assessed the upcoming challenges: more intricate nozzle calibration, advanced auto-leveling systems, and highly complex print control logic. This was entirely uncharted territory.
About a month and a half later, we built our first proof-of-concept prototype. It had no full printing functions, only four independently moving heads. Seeing our design sketches turn into a physical device brought back a familiar thrill. We soon verified the motion control performance on this prototype, and our direction was set in stone: to build the world’s first 3D printer equipped with four fully independent print heads.
One more thing! When we studied the application scenarios of an independent four print head system, we found more exciting possibilities worth exploring.
a. Supporting printing with four materials at once means we can combine TPU, PA, PVA, PETG, and other materials within a single printed object. Imagine sci-fi-style racing cars, soft and comfortable cushions, etc.
b. Supporting the use of different nozzle types at once. For example, a 0.2 mm nozzle can be used for printing outer walls, while a 0.8 mm nozzle can be used for infill.
c. Using four print heads simultaneously on a single large model. Just imagining it is already impressive.
More interesting use cases will be explored gradually during development. We are very clear that the first step is to achieve reliable multi-color printing as well as duplication/mirroring printing features.
